Monon Railroad

Construction of the New Albany and Salem Railroad gives testimony to Salem's stature within Indiana at the time and an expectation of its status in the future. The railroad was organized in Salem in 1846, and was completed five years later. It was the first attempt to link the Ohio River with the Great Lakes by rail. Well into the twentieth century it was known as the Monon Line. Several other competing lines were completed by 1900, including the Baltimore and Ohio which created direct routes to the Eastern trading centers. The river is divided into four segments, designating the river as scenic, recreational and natural, and is managed by the Blue River Commission. The Blue consists of bends, rapids, chutes, limestone bluffs, half canyons, islands, springs, caves, hollows, and bottoms. The Blue River is the first Indiana Stream to be protected by the Natural Scenic and Recreational Rivers Act of 1973.

Located at 206 South High in Salem is one of three houses built in the Second Empire style by Colonel Redfield, the others the Elliott Home on Market and the Shrum home on Hackberry. Pioneer Village - John Hay Center

The village is located directly behind the Steven’s Museum and is within walking distance of all other attractions on the grounds of the John Hay Center. Besides being a step back in time, the pioneer village is an ongoing project for the John Hay Center and will continue to grow for many years to come.The village is a replica of an 1830’s community featuring a jail, blacksmith, school, church, smoke house, barn, bell tower, loom house, and New Philadelphia Post Office and General Store. At various times during the year, volunteers portray excellent renditions of various community figures such as the blacksmith or loom worker.

An ongoing project for the John Hay Center, the Pioneer Village continues to grow. The village is a replica of an 1830’s community featuring a jail, blacksmith, school, church, Haganman house, smoke house, barn, bell tower, loom house, and New Philadelphia Post Office and General Store. In 2023 the John Hay Center has also added a concert venue area.
